5 Tips For Making Your Design Process Easier

Make sure your next home remodel project goes off without a hitch. A fantastic design firm will guide you through the process and transform your home.

Every detail counts, from getting accurate floor plan measurements to creating a final draft of your project and pulling permits. Let’s look at five essential steps for making your design process more accessible and headache-free.

1. Get Accurate Measurements

A top-notch designer begins with the basics. Measuring your space as accurately as possible is the first step when you plan to remodel. Never take shortcuts when it comes to the small things. When you make an initial appointment with a design company, ask these key questions:

  • How long does it take to deliver a floor plan with accurate measurements?

  • How are the measurements recorded and delivered to you?

  • Does your project scope match the size of space you are working with and what are the creative solutions?

Any designer should pay extra attention to potential roadblocks and present workable solutions to suit your space. They will have high standards for accuracy and know that every inch must be accounted for.

2. Have Options

The design process should make your living space more seamless and functional. After you measure the area you’re working with, decide what it is you want to do. There are so many options, so get input on each creative vision:

  • You can add a room to an existing area or even an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) to your yard for guests.

  •  Remodel your kitchen space by adding an island or cabinets and drawers for storage.

  •  Update the appearance of your home with some exterior remodeling

Maybe you’re focused on one area of your home or have several projects you want to complete at once. Walk around with your designer and ask them to help you visualize the end result.

3. The Final Drawings

Once you have your best design ideas laid out, make sure they meet your personal needs for function and appearance. You might need to work with a structural engineer for larger projects. The final drawings should include these key details:

  • Existing walls to be removed or any to be added.

  • The positioning of doors, windows, stairs, and any plumbing or electrical fixtures.

  • Structural details that might require special permits.

A detailed floor plan is an essential piece of the design process. Make sure every aspect is included in the drawing, and ask lots of questions!

4. Pull Permits

Don’t forget that your plans should be vetted by your local City Hall to check for permits that may need to be pulled for your design project. If you skip this step, it could have legal repercussions or cause a big headache for potential buyers of your house in the future. Make sure to cover your bases:

  • Ask your design firm to look into the timeline of pulling permits. Depending on your jurisdiction, it can be a lengthy process.

  • If you find out any structures are unpermitted in this process, it is often possible to get a back permit in order to complete a project.

  • Ask about additional fees for clearances and reviews.

If your plans need corrections, it’s better to find this out before you start your project.

5. Get the Right Bid

After your plan is laid out, it’s time to get bids for the project. Ask for referrals and try to find a local company if you desire more personalized service. Remember, the cheapest bid isn’t always the best! Here are some things to look for:

  • You want each bid to be written in detail and very transparent - you shouldn’t have to investigate or ask to add on because everything in your project is detailed already. Some firms offer instant pricing or online consultations too.

  • Stick to your desired project - be wary of bids that include ‘additions’ you didn’t plan for.

  • Don’t forget to ask about the timeline. You don’t want to wait around for your dream space if another company can begin sooner and get the ball rolling.

In an ideal world, you might even know someone in your area who has done a recent project you could see for yourself. It pays to ask for local recommendations.

Once you’ve decided on a bid it’s time to get your remodeling project started and watch your vision come to life. Don’t forget to pay attention to detail and do your research. Soon you’ll be relaxing in your transformed space.
